Everyone worries about something on a daily basis. Some common things people worry about focuses on money, employment, relationships, weight, and family issues. How many people are worrying about how they can each day provide random acts of kindness to the homeless, or which senior they will visit or take to their doctors appointment. I’m sure not too many. It has once been stated that “Worry is interest paid on trouble before it is due.” Why pay interest on a product if you may never receive it. This is not wise. The English word “worry” comes from a root word that means “to choke or strangle.” The bottom line is that worry chokes the happiness and joy out of our lives.
The question may arise, what is the difference between worry and concern? While, concern focuses on the present, worry focuses on the future. You can be concerned about your bank account balance for this week, but you are worrying about your bank account statement if you are thinking about how much money you should have in it within six months.
Another question may arise, what about planning for the future? This is perfectly fine. It is wise to plan for the future. Planning is biblical. God planned for the future. He planned Jesus Christ’s birth, death, and resurrection thousands of years in advance. Therefore, we should make wise plans as well, but just don’t worry about them. The Bible references scriptures that discuss planning. According to Proverbs 21:5a, “The plans of the diligent leads to profit.” And Proverbs 20:18 says, “Make plans by seeking advice; if you wage war, obtain guidance.
Now we know that it is OK to be concerned and to make plans, but we need to Wipe out Worry so we can have a productive year. There are three easy steps for wiping out worry.
1. Take one day at a time and live in the Present
One way to do this is to have a daily “things to do list”. By doing this, you will only focus on what you need to do for that day. You will be surprised about how many things require your immediate attention. For example if you recently applied for a new position at your job, it does make sense to worry about your application or if you are going to get that job, just focus on your current job. And prepare for the other job if you get called for an interview.
2. Remember your Priorities
Remembering your priorities is so important. Worrying should be a warning sign that our priorities are out of order. If we put God first and do the things He has commanded us to do, then we will not be consumed with worrying about our problems. According to Psalm 5:12; “the Lord will bless the righteous and surround them with FAVOR with a shield.
3. Pray about your Problems
To get over worrying so much we should have a proper response. I Peter 5:7 says that we should “Cast all our cares on Him because He cares for you.” We cast our cares to the Lord by praying to Him. Although he knows about our problems, He just wants us to totally release the burden to him. Pray to the Lord and let Him know exactly how you feel. Philippians 4:6-7 tells us not to be anxious about anything, but to PRAY about everything, then we will have God’s peace.
